Project Approach Curriculum

The Project Approach is a teaching method that helps teachers lead students through comprehensive studies of real-world topics. Projects have a flexible yet complex structure that supports interactive teaching and learning processes. When teachers implement this approach effectively, students feel motivated and engaged in their learning, which leads them to produce high-quality work and grow as individuals and collaborators.

Similar to good stories, projects have a beginning, middle, and end. This timeline helps teachers align the progression of activities with the development of student's interests and personal involvement with the topic of study. It also enables teachers to integrate and meet curriculum benchmarks, a crucial part of the learning process.

Unlike other project-based learning strategies, which provide only a theoretical framework, the Project Approach offers a step-by-step guide to planning and implementing projects while allowing the work to evolve with the student's interests and needs.

At Birth and Beyond Home Daycare and Preschool, we believe in empowering children to take charge of their learning. Every week, we gather as a group to discuss our focus and topic for the upcoming days. We often extend our discussion beyond a week or two, depending on the children's interests and level of engagement with the current topic. We aim to create an environment where children can learn at their own pace and in a way that suits their needs and preferences.

Toddler

Toddlerhood is a pivotal time where your children is learning and soaking in everything like a sponge. Tactile play is so important for this age group as they learn how to navigate through such a big world. Tactile Play, if you've ever watched your toddler stick his hand right into a bowl of Jell-O, you know is one of the first ways children explore and learn about their world through touch. Playtime is also a lot more fun when toys have diverse textures for kids to rub their hands and bodies against. In addition to tactile play, self-help skills are something that caregivers work on with toddlers. Self-help skills such as:

*Self-feeding. The best way to build independent feeding skills is to learn the normal developmental stages of self-feeding. ...

*Independent dressing and grooming. Encourage children to dress and groom by themselves; just provide minimal assistance. ...

*Hygiene and toileting. ...

*Helping with daily chores like table setting and picking up toys. caregivers encourage the beginning of self-help skills such as using utensils to eat, making choices throughout the day as well as learning to put on shoes, coats, etc. Toddlerhood is a crucial time for children as they learn and absorb information like a sponge. Playing with toys that have different textures helps them enjoy playtime while learning about different sensations. Additionally, self-help skills are important for toddlers to develop. Caregivers can encourage self-feeding by teaching children the normal developmental stages of feeding, and assist minimally with independent dressing and grooming. They can also teach hygiene and toileting habits, as well as involve children in daily chores such as table setting and picking up toys. Tactile play is also essential during this stage as children learn about their surroundings through touch, such as exploring a bowl of Jell-O with their hands.

Preschool & Pre-K

Preschool age is another important age and time for your child. During this age group, children are learning important developmental skills that will prepare them for big school (Elementary School), so staff and caregivers implement a lot of developmental opportunities for children to show their strengths as well as areas where they may need more opportunities to work on different skills. Some of the things that our staff implement with preschoolers are:

1. Visual Perception

Visual perception is the ability to interpret what the brain is seeing. This is a very important skill for learning to read, write and do mathematics and should be developed between the ages of 3 and 7.

Visual perception includes visual discrimination, visual memory, perception of shapes, and visual analysis and synthesis.

*2. Auditory Perception

Auditory perception is the ability to interpret and attach meaning to sound. It is important for reading, spelling and language development.

Auditory perception includes auditory discrimination, auditory memory, auditory foreground-background perception, and auditory analysis and synthesis.

3. Listening Skills

This includes auditory perception, but also the ability to understand and follow instructions. Learning to listen is a very important skill, not just for learning to read, but for coping with all aspects of schooling.

4. Speaking Skills

Language involves listening and speaking. Children must develop their speaking skills in order to learn to read and write, understand the world, convey information, socialize, express their feelings and play.

5. Creativity and Thinking Skills

Creativity is a vital skill that must be stimulated over time. It is not just about art, but also about thinking and problem solving, skills that are necessary throughout life.

These are just some of many skills that we work on with preschoolers.
